The MODES Web Server allows records to be viewed in grid format or individually. The Grid format shows all selected records but with limited information. Records are accessed by selecting an index and highlighting an item to use as a search term. The indexes which can be searched are:

1. Organisation
2. Person
3. Place name
4. Subject keywords
5. Record description level - These are Group, Sub-group or Item level description ( Levels 2, 3 or 4 ) which conform to MAD 2 standards ( Manual of Archive Description). Level 2 & 3 entries describe a series of items of the same type or from the same source and contain background information on the records' origins.
6. Record medium - e.g. paper, photographic slide etc.

To begin searching choose an index from the drop-down list and press Update Search.

Select an index term and press Update Search again. You can select more than one index term by holding down Ctrl and highlighting the terms. The number of hits for that search will be indicated.

Press Show Hits to display the records in grid format showing up to four records at a time. You can navigate through the grid by clicking the arrows at the top. Clicking on Details will show the full record for each hit. To return to the grid view click on Back to results list.

It is possible to further interrogate this group of records by pressing Search within results. This will allow you to select an index to search as before.

To clear the screen and begin again press Start a new search

Make a note of the Identity Code of the records you wish to access and contact the University Library's Subject and Liaison Office to arrange an appointment to view.
