Group Description	In 1994 Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council commissioned Antony Gormley to design a major landmark sculpture for a remodelled road interchange on the A1 approach to Tyneside, on the site of a former pithead baths. The Angel of the North was commissioned to coincide with the UK Year of Visual Arts and was supported by funding from Northern Arts, The Arts Council's Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. Siting and assembly of the sculpture was completed in June 1998. The collection includes publicity material and correspondence files. 1995 = 1996
