Group Description	Helen Sutherland (1881 - 1965) was a patron and supporter of the arts as well as a collector of paintings. She lived the latter part of her life, from 1939 to 1964 at Cockley Moor in Cumbria. Her home was regularly visited by artists, some of which were close friends including David Jones, Ben and Winifred Nicholson and the poet Kathleen Raine. She was also a friend and supporter of the Ashington Group (an artists group formed by unemployed miners), having first made contact whilst living in Northumberland. On her death in 1964 Helen Sutherland's collections were bequeathed to lettering artist Nicolete Gray, a close friend. As part of Visual Arts UK an exhibition based on Helen Sutherland's life at Cockley Moor entitled ' A Rhythm, A Rite, A Ceremony' was held at the Penrith Gallery organised by Eden Arts. An accompanying book was published, written by Val Corbett who undertook much of the research for both book and exhibition. Deposit includes correspondence, copies of exhibition material and publicity. 1994 = 1997
