Group Description In 1994 Copeland Council began to research the feasibility of a landmark sculpture for Whitehaven harbour. The eventual outcome was to invite Eduardo Chillida, a sculptor of international renown, from San Sebastian in the Basque region of Spain to produce a piece of work. VADA was involved in arranging the participation of Chillida and prepare a presentation for the council and public. After various changes of plan for both design and location ( the original work was to have been called "Embracing the Winds"), the plans for "Embraced" (Bersakada in the Basque language) were presented as a collaboration bewtween Chillida and architect Joaquin Montero. In 1987 Copeland Council decided not to continue with the project due to limited public support and difficulties in securing adequate funding Material includes correspondence, publicity material, reports and plans.
